Stuart C. Gilliam Law understands the daunting task facing the family of a child with disabilities.  Already stressed, the family must learn a complex set of laws, regulations, and policies, not to mention an entirely new vocabulary of jargon and acronyms.  There may be numerous evaluations/assessments, meetings, and reams of paperwork.  The educational system is charged with providing a "free, appropriate public education" (FAPE), but the family may sometimes feel it is an imperfect ally in the process.

We strive to develop a collaborative and mutually respectful effort among the family, front-line educators, specialists, and school district administrators, to work towards the optimum result under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Parents know their child best.  SCG Law helps families be heard so that their requests and recommendations are fully taken into account in meeting the educational needs of the child.

Ultimately, Stuart C. Gilliam is dedicated to assisting families of children with disabilities in obtaining the assistance, services, and educational setting that will allow the child to learn and, ultimately, achieve his/her full potential.  Whether the family requires formal legal representation, advocacy or merely consultation, he is here to help navigate the system, with the goal of protecting the legal rights of the child to FAPE.

Representation includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Obtaining initial and ongoing assessments
  • Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) for children under 3 years of age with identified disabilities
  • Individual Education Plans (IEP) for children ages 3 years to majority
  • Transition Plans as the child approaches majority
  • Mediations
  • Due Process Hearings
  • Appeals of administrative decisions
  • Litigation
